Lovely recipe from the wonderful American herbalist Rosemary Gladstar. As I am half American I really enjoy learning about American herbalism and recipes from across the water. I’m looking forward to making some fire cider this weekend.

This recipe is also clearly a variation on the traditional European ‘Four Thieves Vinegar.’ The old story is that during the time of the Black Death in the Middle Ages, four thieves were arrested for stealing from the homes of victims of the plague. They were offered their freedom in exchange for the recipe they used to stay abreast of the Plague. Le vinaigre des quatres voleurs is still sold in France today. It is made of vinegar and garlic with added herbs and spices like rosemary, sage, oregano, cinnamon, cloves and so on.
